Default A Ranger / Necromancer Knowledge Base: Role-Playing Builds and Strategies, v2

CONTENTS:
1. INTRODUCTION
2. BUILDS AND STRATEGIES
3. NOTES / ABOUT THE AUTHOR

1. INTRODUCTION
“The Ranger / Necromancer is not one of the more common build combinations that I have come across during my Guild Wars adventures. I am a R/N and personally think R/N is a great build that is both competitive and fun to play. Since the R/N is relatively underplayed, I feel that a Knowledge Base that highlights different ways that a R/N can be used would prove to be useful. I intend to demonstrate several effective R/N strategies and build styles and where in the world they seem to be the most effective. This guide is -still- in rough form. Any R/N’s out there that have something to contribute to the overall content and quality of this guide, please feel free to do so. I have every intention to continue with updates of this guide, and am fully aware that this draft shall prove to be an inadequate base of knowledge.” -Karma

NOTE: This guide *will not* touch upon P v P. If you are familiar with the P v P dynamics of the R / N, feel free to make intelligent contributions and I will try to include a P v P strategy section in the next revision of this guide.

2. BUILDS AND STRATEGIES

The following are builds and strategies for different regions:

ASCALON CITY and the BEGINNING of GAME:
I personally do not remember the skills I was limited to this early in the game. I do remember doing very well with skills: Power Shot, Penetrating Shot, and Troll Unguent. I do not remember using many Necromancer skills early on.

SHIVERPEAKS:
Same as above. If anybody has a good strategy for this point in the game, please submit it.

NOTE: Some of the skills in the following posts are elite skills that may not be available the first time you are in a given region. In other words, some of these strategies are for people going back to hunt and so forth.

BEETLETUN FARMING:
Head out of the East Beetletun exit and you will find a nice small circle full of easy creeps to farm:
Marksman’s Wager (Elite)
Deathly Swarm
Animate Bone Horror
Verata’s Sacrifice
Soul Feast
Whirling Defense
Charm Animal
Comfort Animal

THROUGH THE JUNGLE REGIONS, AGAINST THE MANY PESKY CASTERS:
Melandru’s Resilience
Nature’s Renewal
Choking Gas
Distracting Shot
JUNGLE AREAS WITH LOTS OF TROLLS / TENGUS:
Barrage (Elite)
Dust Trap
Pin Down
Spike Trap

THE DESERT, WHEN BATTLING BUGS AND HYDRAS:
Enfeebling Blood
Spiteful Spirit (Elite)
Shadow of Fear
Throw Dirt
Concussion Shot + Oath Shot
Poison Arrow

POST-ASCENSION, DROKNAR‘S FORGE AND BEYOND:
(Trapper Build, minus poison arrow)
Distracting Shot
(Elite of choice)
Pin Down
Throw Dirt
Barbed Trap
Flame Trap
Dryder’s Defense
(Healing/Res)

HELL:
Choking Gas
Distracting Shot
Dryder’s Defense + Healing Spring
(I have heard people say Winter is a good skill during this part of the game, yet I have no experience using it)

ALL TRAPPER:
Serpent’s quickness
Dust Trap
Spiked Trap (Elite)
Barbed Trap
Flame Trap
Dryder’s Defense
Troll Unguent

ENCHANTMENT HATE
Melandru's Arrows
Debilitating Shot
Distracting Shot
Savage Shot
Tiger's Fury
Barbed Trap
Flame Trap
Rend Enchantments

OFFENSIVE TRAPPER
Oath Shot
Distracting Shot
Barbed Trap
Flame Trap
Healing Spring
Whirling Defense
Throw Dirt
Shadow of Fear

DARK RANGER STYLEE:
Marksman’s Wager (Elite) -or- Spiteful Spirit (Elite)
Enfeebling Blood
Shadow of Fear
Mark of Pain

AoE’NESS:
Mark of Pain + Ignite Arrows
Mark of Pain + Barrage (Elite)

ADDITIONALLY:
If you have no other healing with you, bring Troll Unguent. However, I have also heard it is wise to have faith in one’s healer.
It is almost always a good idea to bring Distracting Shot. Master it.
It is almost always a good idea to bring some sort of a dodge skill.
As a Ranger primary, don’t tank… no matter what. Actually, what you do when you’re out with just henches is up to you.
Experiment, experiment, experiment, there are tons of builds that I have used successfully (and in the following revisions of this guide will include, it’s hard to remember them all)

NOTES:
-Added additional strategies and extra information on existing strategies
-Noted which skills are elite
-Fixed several small errors
-Removed the list of skills that my R/N still has locked so as to reduce the overall length of the guide.

You forgot about Dual Shot under AoE'NESS. While Dual Shot will reduce your damage by a fraction, it does *not* reduce any damage by your buffs (i.e. Ignite Arrows will do full fire damage). Dual Shot should also trigger Mark of Pain twice (it sure as hell hurts me twice when I miss both shots and Price of Failure is on me). So, you really want to go:

Mark of Pain + Ignite Arrows + Dual Shot

I was asking for Necro/Ranger assistance...

Some of this works, but the lack of expertise may change the dynamics.

N/R here, very awesome combo. Seconded on mark of pain + dual shot. It's also triggered by distracting shot and your pet attack, so in a fraction of a second you can have it trigger 4 times. The monsters around your primary target will be dead long before your main target, so there's no reason to worry about kill your main target early with poison or anything.
